a Wee St Andrews bend
Interestingly, while talking to Randy Jensen about his Bobby Jones’ Putting Secret article, I reflected on my latest experiment with a putter.
Using a George Nicoll Whippet Putter, NAP model, I added a slight St Andrews bend and flattened the lie of the club head (much like Bobby Jones). This allows me to hold the handle a bit closer to my body which gives me a sense of security when stroking the putter. When I coupled it with the tip in the ‘Secret’ article I was amazed with how much the putter balance improved. I’m able to simply aim and stroke and the ball seems to track straight off the putter on the line in my head.
I strongly suggest trying this method to anyone who wonders if there is anything possible to enhance the feel of a putter. For that matter, it is a good idea to glance down the shaft of all your clubs and ensure that there is not the opposite of the St Andrews bend. In my opinion, this can be detrimental to the performance of any club. Straight shaft or Wee St A bend is a must for your hickory shafted golf clubs!
