AGS Handicapping

Since Match Play is between two sides or individuals, there is some work to be done to appropriately apply handicapping. In the Auld era, a committee would track any stroke play scores for players. These scores, as an aggregate basis would then be used as the differential between sides or players in match style competitions.

For individual matches: Take the aggregate (i.e. total of latest 3 scores) between players, and calculate the difference.
i.e. 240 and 265. The difference is 25. Allow 3/4 of the difference (multiply x 0.75) 25 x 0.75= 18.75. Divide by 3 (for 3 scores) = 6.25. Roll down to 6. 6 is the handicap in a match between these two players.

Each AGS member is responsible for playing and logging their gross scores from 5600-5800 yards on standard playing courses. These scores are used to calculate your aggregate score.

Now, having knowledge of your own aggregate score and basis, given the situation of beginning a match with another AGS style player….have some fun! analyze the course difficulty and distance, and negotiate your strokes as Auld players would do!
