The Bogey Competition

Par golf in the hickory era was left only for the professionals and even they had a difficult time of it. For instance, it wasn’t until the 26th US Open that a winner, Gene Sarazen-pro golfer, shot par, and that was the winner in a field of players. Given that, “The Bogey’ score was popular at most Clubs.

So, The Clubs would send their First Class amateur players out to the course to play and score each hole. The players were good and they set the bar for what a good player would typically shoot on that course. They would also be the ones that set the “Bogey Score” by hole that would provide the basis for the Bogey Competitions.
